AEP Smith Mountain Dam Visitor's Center
Curtis Elliott Designs Ltd was commissioned by Appalachian Electric Power to redesign the visitor's center for the Smith Mountain Dam, over an hour's drive south of Roanoke, Virginia. The beautiful but remote location proved to be a logistical challenge requiring long commutes and cookout lunches for the six weeks it took to install. There were also lots of technical and artistic challenges involving holography, mechanics, furniture and multimedia design. One of the highlights of the project was a hand-drawn animated movie describing the functions of the Dam projected onto a water droplet textured wall.
